A metric ton is a unit of measurement of mass. It is equal to 1000 kilograms, or one million grams. And it is equal to 2,204.62 pounds in the imperial system used in the United States and a very few other countries.
A metric ton of water has a volume of one cubic meter. When it is frozen into ice it expands by about nine percent, and when it evaporates to become water vapor it expands to roughly 1,600 times its original volume.
