Paraquat, a synthetic organic compound also known as 'paraquat dichloride,' is one of the world's most extensively used herbicides. It is fast acting and non-selective, killing green plant tissue on contact, and it breaks down quickly once it enters the soil. Also contributing to its popularity are its widespread availability, ease of application, and low cost.
However, paraquat is also highly toxic to humans, as well as all other animals, through ingestion, inhalation and skin exposure. It can cause liver, heart, lung and kidney damage, and even small doses can cause death. Particularly vulnerable are agricultural workers who mix, load and apply it or who enter the sprayed fields. Thus it has been banned in approximately 60 countries, although many other countries continue to use because of its great efficiency.
