The giant panda is a type of bear that is native to forested areas of south central China and whose appearance is distinguished by its unique pattern of black and white fur. Also distinguishing it from other bears is its diet, which is vegetarian and consists almost entirely of various species of bamboo. The panda is an endangered species, with a remaining population of only a few thousand, because its once extensive habitat has been greatly reduced and fragmented due to extensive deforestation. Fortunately, the Chinese government has been making major efforts to save the panda by protecting what remains of its habitat and also by prohibiting hunting for its valuable fur.
